Kenn Harris grew up in New York in the 50's and 60's and soaked it all up! … "In 1961, at age 11, I taught myself how to play some chords, and then learned fingerstyle technique with classical lessons at around age 14, and finally learned how to find music within the chords by the time I was 30, and taking jazz ballad lessons in New Mexico" In 1984, Harris began composing his first album The Year of the Tiger which was released on cassette (remember those?) in 1986.
......................................................................................................................................
(comment from Kenn: if super RN, Kim Z. had not said "where's my tape, I want my tape" over and over and over again, to such an extent that I HAD to reprint 100 of them, in the late 90's and had I not recieved such wonderful comments from my friends, I am uncertain if the rest of this storey would have unfolded as it did...THANK YOU KIM
....................................................................................................................................
Fast forward almost 15 years to the release of Songs from the Hacienda, which received critical acclaim, earning him an appearance on T.V. Channel 3's Good Morning Arizona. What took him so long to come up with his second album? "Well … I've been a musician my whole life … and a doctor for about half … but I never stopped playing the guitar … and I'm actually starting to get good at it." Sure enough, the 56 year old Neurologist who attended the original Woodstock, and doesn't wear shoes when he plays has gotten good at it, and has been compared to: Adrian Legg, Ottmar Liebert, Leo Kotke, Earl Klugh, and Michael Hedges.

On his new record, Amadeo, all of the interludes and the Amadeo Suite, (tracks 7,8,9 …Ah Recuerdos, Antara, Amadeo, were performed on his 1959 classical guitar, handmade by Amadeo, a Spanish guitar maker, in New York City, whose friend Andres Segovia was one of the first to play this instrument. Other selections were performed on Kenn's other vintage acoustic guitars including his 1956 Martin 00-17 that he bought with rolls of quarters from his paper route, his 1973 Martin D-28, and his 1966 Gibson L-50 carved archtop.
...................................................................................................................................
On track 12, the September Anthem, Kenn played multiple instruments, including acoustic and electric guitars (utilizing his 1986 Fender Strat, and a Marshall Half-Stack,) midi-keys, as well as percussion. Collaborative additions of bass, and tambourine, by Arizona rockers, Odie, and Tina of The Tina Bailey Band, and an Arizona summer storm, recorded by his daughter Anna, and Kenn's soulful, solo acoustic rendition of The Star Spangled Banner, completed his first multitracking effort. (This 'soundtrack' was just aired with a video montage, at the end of each segment of, the PHX local affiliate CBS TV NEWS on KPHO Channel 5, as a September 11th Memorial, in 2003 & 2004)
This is now available as an ep... CDr... "The Star-Spangled Banner/September Anthem" on www.cdbaby.com/kennharris3 as a homemade CDr, handmade, signed 'folkart' collectors item or is available for digital distribution thru cdbaby/itunes etc.

"La Musica" is 90% work and 10% gift, and I like to give the gift back, ie. 90% goes to recording and production costs. 10% of all efforts for La Musica, goes to organizations that try to repair the world. From AMADEO funds have gone out to the West Side Food Bank's "Kid's Cafe" program, and the Susan G. Komen, foundation and other charity benefits...,educational grants, and gifts... and from HACIENDA checks went out to The Lois Sullivan Scholarship Fund(Brighton Evangelical Congregational Church and the Boston University's Community Servic Center's Student Food Rescue Program in MA., The Pappas School for homeless kids, the Antidefamation Leage, the W.Side Food bank, in AZ, and the Sept.11th relief efforts in NY. THANKS to those who gave extra $ to the charities! I have produced a benefit cd for the Komen Organization's Race Chairs, 2004, see details above.......................................................................................................................................
I got an AMAZING call from Johnny Smith my jazz-tone hero, just after HACIENDA was released....I'm still floating on air from that, and a comment from , Phoenix's own Jessie McGuire!!...and hearing how much my music means, or is used by my friends/fans makes me smile!!!
.......................................................................................................................................
I started AMADEO in July, 2001 and all of the basic recording (prior to editing and mixing and mastering) was completed by September; then the events of 9-11 occured and changed our world. That week I spent about 20 hrs in the studio, recording and working on multitrack sound tracks that eventually after countless of hrs of editing thoughts over the next few months, became the requiem, SEPTEMBER ANTHEM. It took f o r e v e r , to finish the final editing, and then album design, and finally it was sent off for manufacturing in late 2002, and it is now done, out there in the world. Again my thanks goes out to OTIS FRANCIS, the most AMAZING recording engineer, who captures the tones and helps me create the final product, and to KIKI PARRY for the awesome layout/design. If you need a studio call OTIS FRANCIS, ABCAT RECORDING STUDIO, in Phoenix see tel no. above.
THE ALBUM...ART...& PHILOSOPY or Why I am saying NO to most of digital distribution ..........
I am r e a l l y old fashion and have chosen to preserve the 'album' in entirety, all 74 minutes of each album in sequence as the issues of song placement, relationships of keys, tones, emotional effects of the interludes is the subject of way too many hours of thought/... hundreds of photos are taken prior to selection of the few that will be included/ and artwork, texts, fonts, colors, disc graphics,(I spent several hundred dollars extra to reproduce the disc in full color to capture the subtle artistry of details of the handmade guitar that is the 'star' of this album and took the maker a year to complete/ I spent a few months of critical listenin to over 20 hrs of recordings, and drew out and tested and retested various sequences to come up with the final format of September Anthem...) and despite popular culture and changes in 'the industry' I have decided to NOT participate in digital distribution of individual songs/tracks... I grew up in the 50' and 60's and believe in simplistic concepts of respect of artistic truth and intent, golden rules... it is wrong to commit digital piracy via file sharing/ equals stealing, of anyones intellectual property and the heart and soul and efforts that go into it... I actually have bought multiple copies of my favorite albums for gifts for example Blue by Joni Mitchell etc. and think about the energy/creativity/of not just the music but the most simplistic yet beautiful album cover in my opinion ever done by a design team( Photographer Henry Diltz, and art director Gary Burden which was the focus of an entire PBS documentary ...( they also did 100+ other of my favorite ALBUM COVERS such as The Doors, Eagles, James Taylor, Crosby Stills and Nash etc...) or the Koln concert by Keith Jarrett, well, I could go on... and on and etc... but since it is SO important to me, I will settle for less/fame/'sales'/exposure, and stick to my personal beliefs and roots that are in essence the nature of and approach to my art/musical composition, performance, and graphics, and design, layout, and in essence my own personal search for truth... for me it is a spiritual thing and no amount of $ is worth the compromise!
And apart from the philosophical aspects, from a pure business sense, I am not convinced that any musician who is a new independent artist will really benefit...the digital distribution companies/hardware and software/ digital device/ and disc and computer supply companies have become the next secret villians instead of the old well known record companies with the bottom line of more fuel in digital formats for ripping off intellectual property/and although I applaud the logic of trying to encourage responsible ownership of songs... as soon as it is in digital format and "out there" the pirates take over to illegally steal the digital material...thus the end result will be more rip offs. (opinions subject to change as life and technology unfolds...
well...as of this 4th of July 2006 I have partially amended these thoughts... I HAVE DECIDED TO PUT MY VERSIONS OF OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM ON www.cdbaby.com/kennharris3 as a specific entity for digital distribution... see cdbaby link for details as I feel that this version of the "Star-Spangled Banner" and my soundscape of 9/11/2001 should be out there in the world. I still have no plans to release full albums on line. This one was made especially for this purpose. The full album is actually handmade folk art, signed etc and of a limited edition, with 4 available.
well here's the ZiaZine review... Zia is one of the last indie record stores in Arizona!
"ZiaZine LOCAL reVIEWS:
Kenn Harris
Amadeo
Clarence & Blue Recording Co.
When Bill and Ted (of Wyld Stallyns fame) get old an mellow, this will be their jam.
Though Harris clearly has an education in classical guitar, his music is equally informed by modern artists. Jimmy Page's work on "Black Mountainside" by Led Zeppelin best approximates Harris' style and niche.Though younger fans of John Fahey and recent work by Papa M or Will Oldham might be intrigued by the finger work here, this album is truly for fans of the eclectic virtuosity of Adrian Legg or Michael Hedges."

I am a new fan, and have just caught his live show, in Tempe, with his troup of performance artists. It is hard to describe what his writing/style approach is about... reminds me of an unusual sythesis of David Byrne in the Burning Down the House, Jonathan Demme, video with Ellis Paul's softer side... and a HS marching band... with classical and folk twists. GREAT STUFF!!! a show not to miss if in your town!
Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter Band's "Oh My Girl" ... great cd and see them live if you are at all able to... they tour Arizona, not infrequently, and just did a wonderful show at the rhythm room and with the most dreamy tones from Phil's guitar ( remember Duane Eddy's, reverb thru the water tank behind the service station in Phoenix... yup that GOOD) and the Electric Viola, and Upright Bass, and totally "band responsible...understated" Drummer, add to Jesse's haunting lyrics, and acoustic guitar and sultry vocals... and the band's harmony vocals, and totally wonderfully intergrated sound from lots of touring... they are simply great... check out their site and reviews THEY ARE A GREAT BAND, and for me a new favorite band! www.jessesykes.com I really LOVE THIS BAND !
Yeah Yeah Yeahs... total raw energy!
A Tramp Shining, including McArthur Park by Richard Harris, all Jimmy Webb's masterpieces... ( I am studying his book "Tunesmith")
Patty Griffin, her new album, "Impossible Dream" is brilliant, touching, and simply beautiful. and I just got the old one re' Ghosts" I love her use of languge change of tenses, narrators voices, absolutely amazing. I am performing 2 of her songs "Florida" and "Top of the World" that have taken forever to get into my way of understanding or interpreting of her songs.

Andrea Bocelli "Romanza" Whenever I get nervous about performance I think of the experience of his performance! Standing on the edge of a stage a tiny wood block to let him know where his footing was safe, singing his heart out with the San Diego Symphony, at Am West Arena...

Kelly Joe Phelps
Tracy Grammer ( with Jim Henry )
Patty Larkin
John Mayer: warning for mature guitar aficianados do not be fooled by the poppy-radio-friendly songs your kids listen to and dismiss him he is an AMAZING GUITAR PLAYER and I have seen him twice, and his Austin City Limits performance with Buddy Guy and his reverence for SRV is palpably real...he may be the best all around guitar player out there...effortlessly floating between acoustic/jangly pop-rock/ and jazz and blues/ and Strat/pureamped tube toned rock, I was in awe at seeing him perform TWICE !
Counting Crows: MY FAVORITE BAND( although on update Jesse Sykes is way up there also ie my favorite other band) and live absolutely wonderful !

Books/contacts: I recommend to my musician friends...
Deep Community (adventures in the modern folk underground): Scott Alarik www.blackwolfpress.com Jacob's mentor in the music business Ralph Jaccodine, published this book. It encourages the independent artist's understanding of the importance of what singer/songwriter/independent musicianship is all about...how do you define success???I love this book, and have discovered artists I had not been aware of because of it...and met some of them in Arizona, because of it.
Performance: Livingston Taylor...a wonderful book, a synopsis of his Berkeley College of Music ( Boston ) course.
How to Record and Produce Your Own Independent Record Album:( check the title it says it all) Tim Sweeney and Mark Geller...a must have for the independent musician!
CD Forge (LUCAS JONES IS THE BEST) www.cdforge.com resource for production/Lucas and Mike Jones, also were sponsors of the AMADA project. quality, perfection with a purpose, and totally cool one stop, on target production...and did I say fun?
www.cdbaby.com resource for distribution ( though I do not think digital distribution is "artist friendly" see philosophy above.)
www.bathtubmusic.com run by friends Jennifer Spector and David Tieman ( and ck out the other artists on their site and if you are a musician, consider putting your music on line, there is still room in the bathtub for more musicians! GOOD LUCK IN SEATTLE !
Abcat Recording Studio, Otis Francis, tel. (602) 696-8763 ODIE WORKS ON ALL MY ALBUMS AND IS A MUSICIANS GIFT!
www.ecolingo.com Dion Zeuss is an award winning graphic design artist, and donated HUNDREDS of hours to the AMADA project, making it look as good as the music sounds. Dion is a tireless perfectionist when it comes to the finest of details, color resonance design, etc, an artist and a wonderful person to work with, and recommended to all my Arizona, musician friends, (OK ALL FRIENDS... ANYwhere, and I mean anywhere... we worked on the project, by the inf superhighway, in Arizona, New York, California, and New Mexico, for proofs and data input... ie businesses, etc. for their projects, and publicity design, cards letter heads...) The name of her company, says alot, and if you want something original, well done and beautiful... contact Dion.
I am pleased to note that there are 1500 copies of Hacienda, are out there, and now is a collector's item, that 1000 copies of Amadeo are out there, and almost sold out ( about 20 left) and that there are over 3000 copies of the Amada project out there with only a few hundred left... not bad for the tiniest record company on the planet!
I am working on "Jornada" the next guitar album, and also an alt/country/folk/soft/"no depression" type of album, and taking some voice lessonst o achieve this ... from Vanessa Purdy who unlocking my voice... please check vanessapurdy.com .
Oh....... If I ever really get famous or something like that The Front ROW is for Kenn:)Heads (term first used by R. Uri who upon attending 2 concerts in a row said "HEY, I'm a Kenn Head"
